AEROBIC
Describes oxygenated water or bacteria which require oxygen to survive.
ANAEROBIC
Describes water which contains little or no oxygen, or bacteria which favour this environment.
BICHEM
Selectively adapted proprietary bacterial cultures used to seed biological treatment plants. Can be used to start up a new plant or re-seed where the biomass has died off. There is a large range of bacterial blends targeted for different pollutants.
BIOMASS
Refers to the microbes responsible for breaking down the pollutants in a waste water treatment plant.
BOD - Biochemical Oxygen Demand
A measure of the biodegradable pollutant loading in a sample.
COD - Chemical Oxygen Demand
A measure of the total amount of pollutant material in a sample.
DAF - Dissolved Air Flotation
Type of primary treatment plant which removes suspended solids through a flotation process.
DIRECT SOIL INJECTION
A process of breaking down pollutants by direct injection into a specially prepared soil site.
DO - Dissolved Oxygen
FLOCCULANT
A range of chemicals used to enhance flotation and/or settling of suspended solids.
HYDRAULIC FLOW / LOADING
A measure of the total amount of water passing through a waste water system.
pH - potential of Hydrogen
A measure of a solution's acidity (<7) or alkalinity (>7).
POLYMER
A range of highly viscous chemicals used to enhance flotation or settling of suspended solids. Often used in conjunction with flocculants.
REFRACTORY
Refers to non biodegradable pollutants
